Thank you for sharing! Some time ago, I remember reading Tom Kelley’s The Art of Innovation and thinking, “IDEO culture sounds great if one is a young man with zero family commitments and who thrives in workaholism.”

Unstructured creativity, volunteering your weekends and late evenings are glorified in the book — because the employees are having such wild fun! But what about childcare, looking after elderly relatives? That stuff often falls on the shoulders of women, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, such as people of colour (of which I am one). So, the biggest message I got from the book was not about how to excel at innovation, but about how, if you are a woman with dependents, you are not welcome at this company.

Thankfully, in tech, there are some great examples of companies that take, or strive to take diversity and inclusion seriously. Let’s hope they lead the way.
